Pelham Pride Day
4/24/2002  Another Success

The City of Pelham held its fifth annual Pride Day on April 20 as residents pitched in to pick up litter all over the community.  The two hour event brought together over 100 volunteers split into 10 teams collecting more than 200 bags of litter from the city's main thoroughfares.

As a thank you to the residents who participated this year, the event concluded with "Celebration At The Pavilion" in City Park where the volunteers received T-shirts, food and live entertainment.  Again this year Auntie Litter and her Pollution Patrol Kids performed for the audience as all enjoyed a "rest up" following two hours of litter cleanup.  A popular part of the celebration each year is the contest for the most unusual article collected.  Among those items were a framed picture, a metal gutter, a lottery ticket and a paycheck.

Pelham Pride Day is a project undertaken by the Pelham Beautification Board and has become a popular family event. Other sponsors include Alabama PALS - People Against A Littered State, Coke, Bud's Best Cookies and Sysco. This year's event also received a grant from Legacy, a non-profit organization working to create environmentally responsible citizens.  The organization operates through a grassroots network to develop and disseminate fact based balanaced environmental information.

Pelham Pride..."Collectively, we can make a difference!"
