Pelham teams compete at Southern Sectional Championships
7/29/2002  Women's 3.0 and Senior Women's 3.5 teams reach Finals!

Pelham sent four State Championship teams to compete in the Southern Sectional League Championships. The USTA League Sectionals were held in Louisville, Kentucky with each state in the section sending their state champions to compete. The levels contested by Pelham teams were Women's 3.0, Senior Women's 3.5, Men's 4.0 and Men's 4.5.

Women's 3.0 - The only team to play in the first half of the tournament, the 3.0s set the pace by winning all three of their round robin matches and moving to the finals. Displaying the determination that had fueled the team all year they fought in every match and were set for a battle in the final. Facing a tough South Carolina team they jumped out to an early lead winninig a doubles match convincingly against a pair that had not lost in two years. The remaining points were vigorously contested with South Carolina finally edging out the team match 3-2. The team is coached by Ann and captained by Sandy Setser.

Senior Women's 3.5 - Dedication is the hallmark of the Senior Women's 3.5 team. After winning a State title in 2001 but not going near as far in the Sectionals, they had set their goals on an improved showing. The team stumbled in the opening match and lost 2-1. The team then showed the result of a year of coaching and hard work. Needing to win their next two matches 3-0 they gathered their resolve and shut out the next two opponents to win a spot in the finals. The weather and the competition was hot in the finals. Lining up against a strong Louisiana team that had won the other half convincingly, each court was hotly contested but Louisiana prevailed. The team is coached by Ann and captained by Marlene Rikard.

Men's 4.0 - The competition was fierce for the Men's 4.0s making their first trip to the Sectionals. Finding the going tough the 4.0s put up a good fight and learned about the level of play at the Sectional Championships. The team is captained by Danny Trotter.

Men's 4.5 - Experience at Sectional match play was the cornerstone of the Men's 4.5 team. Making their seventh consecutive appearance at Sectionals the team knew the depth and aggressive play needed for success at this level. Winning the first three matches in the round robin set up Saturday against a tough North Carolina team, a win would send the team to the final with good momentum. The singles points were split, and the doubles battled in close matches until North Carolina squeaked out a 3-2 win by the closest of margins. The team is captained by Mark Barron and Mike Barnett.
