  Pelham Youth Hockey Information

Pelham, Alabama

The investment required to play ice hockey is somewhat surprising to most people.  Unlike other sports in Alabama, facilities to play ice hockey are extremely limited. It requires a considerable investment to provide the ice, especially in the Southeastern United States.  Ice time is currently rented from the Pelham Civic Complex & the cost is divided equally among all league participants.  Each player registered to participate will receive a team jersey, matching hockey socks, and ice time for both practice sessions and games.

If participation is desired and financial hardship is an issue please discuss your situation with Pelham's Hockey Director, Jeff Cheeseman, for possible alternatives.  PYHL strives to provide a program that is accessible to any youth in the area  interested in playing ice hockey.

The Pelham Youth Hockey League offers three options for playing ice hockey: House League, House Select, and Travel Hockey.

 House League

  • Local program
  • No travel
  • A commitment level of 2-3 days per week October through the beginning of March
  • A cost of $275-$375 per season plus equipment per season.
  • Players beginner level on up ages 6 – 18.  Must know how to skate.
  • Registration in August with evaluations taking place after player is registered.

        House Select Team

  • Travel teams for each level of play
  • Does not require the constant weekend travel commitment of Travel Hockey
  • Strikes between House & Travel in terms of cost and investment of time

        Travel Hockey

The travel program is currently being managed by the Birmingham Youth Hockey League (BYHL) board. The travel program is planned to transition to the City of Pelham priot to the 2007-2008 season.

  • Extensive travel is required throughout the season.
  • Players are chosen based on their skills and abilities, and must tryout & be considered.
  • Substantial time commitment, including some travel out of state, additional practices, etc.
  • Travel players are also required to participate in the PYHL House League.
  • Travel fees vary from $600 to $900, plus travel expenses, per season in addition to House League fees.  The final costs are normally defined at the end of the season as expenses are determined through opportunities to register for additional tournaments. The final costs are equally divided among each participating travel team player.
