Benefits have been made available to employees through the Civil Service Law and approval of the governing body. Benefits are administered through the Human Resources Department. Questions concerning these benefits may be directed to this department. Following are highlights of some of the benefits offered to City of Pelham employees.
HEALTH INSURANCE
The City of Pelham is a member of the Local Government Health Insurance Program administered by the State Board of Insurance. LGHIP is a self-insured group health insurance program funded from the premiums of the participating local government units and their subscribers. Insurance premiums may be tax deferred through the City of Pelham Cafeteria Plan.
CAFETERIA PLAN
The City of Pelham offers a qualified “Cafeteria Plan” which allows eligible employees (full-time) to purchase health insurance benefits, and insurances through a compensation reduction agreement for the amount of these premiums.
LIFE INSURANCE
The City of Pelham purchases life insurance for all full-time employees with Dearborn Life. Effective date of coverage is date of employment. Coverage is $25,000 Life and $100,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment.
RETIREMENT PLAN
The City of Pelham is a member of the Employees´ Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA), which operates under the Retirement Systems of Alabama. An additional retirement plan is available through the Retirement Systems of Alabama – RSA– http://www.rsa-al.gov/
HOLIDAYS
New Year’s, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot’s Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day. Holidays are subject to change at the discretion of the governing body.
VACATION/SICK LEAVE/SICK LEAVE BANK
All employees holding regular full-time positions shall be allowed to earn vacation with pay in accordance with length of service. All employees holding regular full-time positions shall be allowed to earn sick leave at the rate of one workday for each month of service. Any full-time, classified employee of the City may become a member of the Sick Leave Bank by agreeing to permanently transfer five (5) accumulated sick days from their personal sick leave reserve into the Sick Leave Bank. All full-time employees of the City, who are a member of the Sick Leave Bank, may be permitted to draw 25 workdays per year with proper approval.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
An employee assistance program is available to all full-time employees. Confidential counseling is available free of charge to employees.
